From January to July, 52,700 new motorhomes were registered, 9.8% more than in the same period last year, reports the Caravan Industry Association (CIVD). In contrast, demand for new caravans fell slightly by 1.1% during the same period, with just under 15,000 new registrations.

CIVD Managing Director Daniel Onggowinarso said the industry was pleased with the year so far, given the political and economic challenges facing companies and consumers. “This development shows that the underlying interest among holidaymakers in motorhome travel remains high. According to the association, there will be more than 838,000 motorhomes from Germany on the road by the end of 2023,” compared to 757,000 caravans.

More people than ever stayed overnight at campsites and designated caravan parks in Germany last year, according to a study published by the association. According to the German Institute for Tourism Economics (dwif), according to CIVD, a total of 54.5 million overnight stays were registered at campsites in 2023, which is 4% more than a year ago. In addition, there were 13.5 million overnight stays at designated caravan parks.

The local economy is showing positive trends

The association emphasizes that the local economy is benefiting greatly from this trend. By 2023, caravan holidaymakers will generate more than 19.5 billion euros in tourism sales for the German economy, almost 8 percent more than in 2022. Around 6.4 billion euros of these sales remain directly in the holiday region and strengthen the local economy.
