New Delhi: After more than four years as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, JP Nadda was appointed as the minister of health and chemical fertilizers on Monday, a day after he was sworn in as a cabinet minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.
In Modi 2.0, both cabinets are headed by Mansukh Mandaviya.
Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for appointing him to the Cabinet, Nadda said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) will do all it can to ensure better healthcare infrastructure and facilities to ensure better treatment for everyone.

Moreover, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers will make every effort to realize PM Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’,” Nadda wrote on X.
Nadda held the post during the first term of the Modi government before taking over as the current BJP president in 2019 and becoming the official party president in January 2020 after Amit Shah was appointed as the home minister.
Nadda’s term as BJP chief ended in January. He was given an extension of six months to oversee the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His term will end in June.
The 63-year-old is the only representative from Himachal Pradesh in the BJP-led government.
He served as India’s Health Minister from November 9, 2014 to May 30, 2019 during the first term of the Modi government.
Nadda, who holds a law degree, began his political career with the All India Students’ Union (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 1991, he became the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Youth Movement (BJYM).
He held several key positions in the BJP and led its campaigns in several states – from Bihar to Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Punjab. He also served as a minister in the BJP government in his home state of Himachal Pradesh.
Nadda was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and became a member of the BJP Parliamentary Committee in 2014 after Amit Shah took over as party president.
After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Nadda was appointed as the current president of the BJP. In January 2020, Shah, then president of the BJP, was appointed as India’s Home Minister, and Nadda was subsequently promoted to president of the BJP.
Nadda’s appointment as BJP president comes at a time when the party is facing stiff challenges from the united opposition in assembly elections in several states, with signs that the party needs to rethink its election strategy.
Although the BJP won a landslide victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it has suffered repeated defeats in assembly elections since 2018, with the only exception being in Haryana, where the party formed the government in an alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party.
Under Nadda’s leadership, the BJP won new allies and notched up a string of impressive victories in parliamentary elections. During Nadda’s tenure as BJP president, the party consolidated its strongholds and expanded its influence despite occasional setbacks.
His term was due to end in June and the low-profile leader from Himachal Pradesh had wanted to resign after another impressive Lok Sabha election victory, but the BJP’s margin of victory in the just concluded general elections was reduced.
The party failed to win a majority on its own, winning only 240. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats, keeping Modi on track to remain prime minister for a third year in a row despite a resurgence in the opposition.
He has a good relationship with Modi, who has long been in charge of the party’s affairs in Himachal Pradesh.
Besides, Anupriya Patel, MP of the Apna Party (S), and Prataprao Jadhav, MP of the Shiv Sena Party, were appointed as ministers of state for health and family welfare.
Patel was also appointed Minister of State for Health and Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers.
She had served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Health from 2016 to 2019. Patel, 43, has been serving as Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry since 2021 in the Modi government 2.0.
She defeated the Socialist Party candidate Ramesh Chand Bind by 37,810 votes in the Mirzapur assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh.
Patel’s Apna Party (S) fought the election in alliance with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. Patel won the election in Mirzapur for the third consecutive time as the candidate of the National Democratic Alliance.
Previously, she had won elections from Mirzapur constituency in 2014 and 2019.
The 64-year-old Jadhav won the Buldhana Lok Sabha constituency seat for the fourth consecutive time. Jadhav won more than 3.9 lakh votes in the 2024 Buldhana Lok Sabha election.
He served three terms as MLA of the district between 1995 and 2009.
Jadhav had a parliamentary attendance rate of 71% and participated in many debates and discussions in the Lok Sabha.
