The President appointed Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafiu as the Emir for this year’s Hajj.
Before leaving for Hajj, Minister Shafie said that all pilgrims were in good condition and their affairs were well arranged with the cooperation of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the Hajj Company.
Minister Shafie said this was the largest number of pilgrims in Sri Lanka’s recent history. He said more than 1,100 pilgrims had travelled to Mecca.
“I want to share a good news at this time. All the pilgrims are in good health. Arrangements have improved. Everything is going as per our arrangements,” he said.
As Hajj Amir, he will be responsible for all affairs of the pilgrims under the supervision of Wazir Shafi.
The Hajj Emir left for Mecca this year with the last group of pilgrims from Sri Lanka. In addition to Minister Shafieu, the last group of pilgrims from Sri Lanka also included the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammad Shaheem Ali Sayyid who also left.
