Brighton & Hove Albion and Championship side Leeds United have signed striker Georginio Ratel on a five-year contract, the club said on Monday.

While financial details have not been disclosed, British media reported that the Premier League side paid a club-record fee of £40 million ($51 million) for the 22-year-old French player.

In 2023, Root moved from German side Hoffenheim to Leeds United for a then-club record transfer fee of £36 million ($46 million). In his 18 months at the club, he made 66 appearances and scored eight goals.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said Root would be something for the fans to get excited about.

He said in a statement: “Jorginho is a player who can excite the fans and his performances for Leeds United last season really showed what he is capable of in English football – but I know him from his time playing for Hoffenheim in Germany.

Leeds United said they were unable to convince Rath to stay.

Leeds United said: “While Jorginho’s release clause had come into effect, we made every effort to keep him at Elland Road but he insisted on leaving and we respect his decision.”

Brighton beat Everton 3-0 in their season opener and will host Manchester United in the next round of the Premier League on Saturday.
