The Saint Lucia Lifesaving Association (SLLSA) is deeply troubled by the increasing number of drowning incidents on the island.
In response to these alarming incidents, SLLSA urges authorities to take immediate action to address this serious problem.
The organization is particularly concerned about the increasing number of sexual assaults among young men under 35.
SLLSA stressed that regulators must urgently improve water security and awareness across the country.

Shockingly, according to the Saint Lucia Drowning Statistics Bureau, Saint Lucia ranks 28th in the world for drowning incidents.
The significant increase in such incidents this year has exposed serious flaws in the country’s water safety policies and drowning prevention strategies.
SLLSA council member Terrol Compton stressed the urgency of the situation and expressed concern about the significant increase in drowning cases.
“Looking at our population and the drowning figures recorded so far, there has been a significant increase in drownings and we are only halfway through the year,” he said.
Compton stressed that the SLLSA is deeply concerned and “we want to see more happen.”
SLLSA strongly believes that more proactive measures are needed. The organisation plays a vital role in providing lifesaving services for water activities at the seaside.
However, public awareness and education on water safety are crucial.
The SLLSA strongly recommends that all schools islandwide implement water safety education and urges parents and guardians to prioritise swimming lessons for their children.
Looking ahead, the SLLSA announced that it will hold refresher courses for certified lifeguards and lifeguards from August to October 2024, as well as a training program for new applicants.
The SLLSA urgently calls on all relevant partners, stakeholders and government agencies to support its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and strengthen life-saving capacity.
The group says they cannot solve this problem alone and will need the support and collaboration of the entire community to make a significant impact.
