Her strong reaction The New Republic But the ELAS Attica officers’ union led to the position of MEP Nicos Papahe was accused of making insults and racist descriptions of police officers.

In fact, in its announcement the ND called for the expulsion of MEPs.

“After the Attica Hellenic Police Union announced the horrific attack on police officers by Syriza MEP Nikos Pappas on social media, it became clear that the police opposition is completely dominated by polarization. We cannot even replicate the images and sounds posted on the Internet,” said the statement from the New Democracy press office.

“The vulgar and horrifying behavior of Mr. Pappas is a cruel insult to the thousands of our police officers who carry out their duty to protect our fellow citizens with self-sacrifice, consistency, humanity and a sense of responsibility. It is unimaginable that a representative of our country in the European Parliament behaves like the worst thug and issues one threat after another. This time, we expected Mr. Kasehlakis to do the obvious and fire Mr. Pappas. Hopefully, we will not see another “half-deletion” like that of Polakis”, ND concluded.

Attica Greek Police Union Response

Following the incident, the Attica Hellenic Police Union issued a statement stating the following:

“Dear colleagues, through their posts on social media, some continue to harbor inexplicably repressive and racist prejudices against the police. Their deep hatred for the police is expressed at every opportunity. In this way, they think they are liked, but by whom?

Any derogatory description of the police does not touch us. On the contrary, perhaps it is proof that we are doing well, because a minority of obsessives continue to abuse us. It is absurd that the abuser, MEP Nikos Pappas, by virtue of his position and ability, must represent the people, instead of expressing himself with abusive, racist and derogatory descriptions of combat police officers.

Dear colleagues, we continue to work and fulfill our duties. The reward comes from our fellow citizens themselves, who are at their side every day to provide them with our help. We do not divide our fellow citizens into different groups according to any criteria. We defend and protect our Homeland, our borders and our history. We abide by the Constitution and state laws. These authorities are represented by the Greek Police and we serve them as the Greek Police. Our work has great power and provides precious security to our fellow citizens”.

What was Nikos Pappas’s response?

Through a post on Instagram, the MEP spoke of a micropolitical confrontation aimed at “changing the agenda on fire”, even saying that “it would be nice if Maximos dealt with more serious problems. People are burning, dying, living on the streets, and you are flying kites.”

He said it in detail.

“Seeing the disaster the government reacted so quickly, trying to engage in micropolitical confrontations, changing the agenda for the fires and issuing statements against me, I wondered if it would have been better if there had been such a direct reaction last week, when almost half of the population did so. Attica burned. Anyway. Since then I respect and acknowledge the security institutions and they themselves know this in our private discussions. But I do not accept any far-right troll, any fascist, threatening and insulting me and my family. I will always answer in the same style, which does not negate the European Parliament position I have, my values and my personality. It’s good to be dealing with more serious problems in Maximos, where people are burned, dead, on the streets, and you are flying kites”.

It is worth mentioning that during an online dispute between Nikos Pappas and a police officer, he allegedly insulted the industry, while in audio posted online, he can be heard saying to the person he was chatting with via text message: “Good luck in everything you love.”
