Pokhara, August 1. Indradhara Bishta won the men’s title and Balkashi Gurung won the women’s title in the golf tournament held at Lomanthang, known as the highest point in the world, on Saturday.
Bisht won the third edition of the World Premier Golf Classic in the golf tournament held at Lomanthang Township-5 Lowthang in Upper Mustang.
In the golf tournament held at an altitude of 4,600 to 4,795 meters, Bisht won the championship with a score of 3 under par and 21 points in 9 holes. The game was played in a stable Ford full handicap system.
Fusang Lama came in second, while Bista won the championship with pars on 3 holes, triple bogeys on 1 hole and bogeys on 5 holes. Fusang, who is also the vice president of the Nepal Golf Association, shot pars on 5 holes, double bogeys on one hole and bogeys on the remaining 3 holes to achieve a score of 2 under 20.
After a practice session on Friday, non-resident Nepalis from Pokhara, Kathmandu, Dharan, Sauraha, Butwal and the United States also participated in Saturday’s competition.
Nirmal Shrestha, representing the Non-Resident Nepalese Association of America, won the overall title in the men’s event. Chief marshal Bhuvan Gurung informed that Nirmal won the overall title with 14 points.
Shrestha birdied the par-3 third hole and saved par on 4 holes, with a double bogey on one hole and bogeys on the remaining 3 holes.
Balkashi Gurung, vice president of the Golf Association, won the women’s competition. Less than a year after taking up golf, Gurung won the title of the world’s highest golf course.
Balkash finished second with 23, 5 under, while Dharan’s Jhuna Rai finished second with just 1 stroke behind. Jhuna finished with 22, 4 under.
During the competition, Sanyog Shahi won the “Longest Drive” award, while Medang Lama won the “Closest to the Pin” award. The third hole of the course was the “Hole in One”, which was the closest to the pin. There was a Yak Award in the “Hole in One” competition, but no one won it.
Lomanthang Township Chairman Tsi Nurbu Gurung and Vice Chairman Chayumi Bista Gurung, District Head, Chandra Tandan of City Express and others presented trophies to the top and various category champions.
Speaking to Online Khabar after the award ceremony, village president Tasi Nurbu said golf is not only good for Mustang but also for the whole of Nepal.
He requested the national and Nepali governments to help the Lomanthang Golf Course to set a world record for the highest golf course in the world.Chayumi Bista, vice chairman of the village, said they were eager to welcome golfers from all over the world to the golf course on the mountainside.
Indradhara Bista, also a winner of the tournament, who is working to make the golf course in Lowthang the highest in the world, said players from many countries would participate next year.
Bista, who was once a member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, said he had also visited golf courses in different countries of the world and he said there was no end to the thrilling and natural courses like Lomanthang.
Women’s champion Balkash said she was proud to be able to write her name and become the champion on the world’s highest golf course in her first year of playing golf.
Earlier, two-time champion Shyam Tamang said that playing at the historic golf course was a big deal.
AC Sherpa, on behalf of the Seattle and Portland Himalayan Tiger Golf Club, provided Indradhara with $1,000 in support for golf course improvements.
Sherpa, who is also the Nepali government’s consul general in Seattle, Washington, said he will come to Lomanthang to play golf with people from all walks of life starting next year.
There are 70,000 golf courses in the United States alone. Nepal has only 4/5 of them. However, the excitement like that in Lomanthang is endless. I didn’t expect there would be so many here” Sherpa said, “Our friend Nirmal also won the championship this time, which will also have a big impact in the United States. “Next year, we will bring not only non-residents but also foreign players here.”
