WASHINGTON: A Missouri woman was arrested on Friday (August 16) for allegedly “brazenly” stealing ownership of Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley, from the king of rock and roll’s family, the US Justice Department said.
Lisa Jeanine Findley, 53, faces federal mail fraud and identity theft charges and could face more than 20 years in prison.
“The defendants orchestrated an elaborate scheme to fraudulently sell Graceland, falsely representing that Elvis Presley’s daughter had pledged the historic landmark as collateral for a loan that she failed to repay before her death,” Nicole Argentieri, chief of the Justice Department’s criminal division, said in a statement.
“As part of this brazen scheme, we allege that the defendants forged numerous documents in an attempt to extort a settlement from the Presley family,” Argentieri said.
According to court documents, Findlay claimed that Elvis’ only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley (died in January 2023), borrowed $3.8 million from a company called Naussany Investments in 2018 and used Graceland as collateral for the loan, but failed to repay the debt.
“Findley allegedly falsified loan documents that included forged signatures of Elvis Presley’s daughter and a Florida notary public,” the Justice Department said.
The Graceland foreclosure sale was originally scheduled for May, but a Tennessee judge blocked the Memphis property from going on at the last minute after actress Riley Keough, granddaughter of Elvis Presley, filed a lawsuit alleging that loan documents were forged.
