Since May 2024, the number of confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Italy has increased to 99, with 47 new cases between August 8 and 14. Of these, 60 were neuroinvasive (1 in Lombardy, 14 in Veneto, 4 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 36 in Emilia-Romagna, 2 in Puglia, 1 in Calabria, 1 imported from the United States, 1 from Albania). 14 asymptomatic cases were found among blood donors (4 in Lombardy, 1 in Veneto, 9 in Emilia-Romagna), and 25 febrile cases (18 in Veneto, 5 in Emilia-Romagna, 1 imported from Oman, 1 imported from Morocco). According to the bulletin of the Superior Institute of Health (ISS) on the combined surveillance of West Nile virus and Usutu virus on August 15, four deaths were also reported (two in Veneto, one in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and one in Emilia-Romagna). Currently, 33 provinces in 11 regions of Italy have confirmed the transmission of West Nile virus in vectors, animals or humans. In addition, during the same period, a case of Usutu virus was reported in the province of Modena.
