Heavy rains caused a mudslide or landslide on the Arlberg federal road near Sankt Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol on Friday evening.

On Friday evening, shortly before 7 p.m., a landslide near St. Anton forced the Arlberg federal highway to be closed in both directions on the Tyrol side.

As this is a large-scale mudslide, the closure between St. Jakob and the Arlberg pass is expected to last for several hours.

Several streets were also flooded in the San Anton area. According to initial reports, no one was injured.

The Arlberg Tunnel is also closed.

As the Arlberg Tunnel is currently closed for renovation work, both road connections over the Arlberg are temporarily impassable. The only options are large-scale avoidance, for example via the B198 and Lechtal or through Germany.

Other roads also affected

Localized mudslides also occurred elsewhere in Tyrol. Sellraintalstrasse (L13) in the Innsbruck Land district was blocked by mudslides. Sellraintal was initially only accessible via Oberperfer Straße.

A severe storm also hit the western low mountains. The community of Grinzens (Innsbruckland district) was particularly badly affected, and the wine cellars there had to be emptied.
