On August 15, 2024, the first case of monkeypox caused by the Clade 1 variant was reported outside the African continent in Sweden, an important epidemiological novelty as Clade 1 is considered the most dangerous form of the virus. According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, the case was confirmed in Stockholm. Swedish Health Minister Jakob Forsmed declared that although the situation is serious, the risk of infection to the public is low and the country is well prepared to deal with emergencies.
