120,000 Russians displaced
Dozens of mourners gathered at an Orthodox church in the center of Sumy, a hub in the Kursk border region, on Thursday to pay their last respects to the six Ukrainian soldiers who have died since Kiev launched its offensive.
As the pastor presided over the funeral and incense smoke filled the air, the families of the victims burst into tears, and relatives and friends dressed in black and holding wreaths came in an endless stream.
“It is difficult to say goodbye to them because we want them to live forever and live among us as glorious sons of their motherland,” the pastor told mourners.
“Our mission is to pray for our brave warriors and their families.”
The bearers carried the coffins out one by one, and the choir sang hymns in unison as they were sent to the burial site. When the funeral ended, air raid sirens rang out over Sumy.
In Kursk, AFP reporters saw around 500 evacuees from the border region queuing to receive food and clothing distributed by the Russian Red Cross.
Russia says more than 120,000 people have left or been evacuated.
