London: England cricket captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of Tuesday’s Test series against Sri Lanka after tearing his hamstring in a domestic match over the weekend. The 33-year-old Stokes was on crutches after he was injured while batting for the Northern Super Chargers during their hundred on Sunday.

Stokes will miss England’s three-match series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 21. “The all-rounder plans to return to action on England’s winter tour against Pakistan,” England said in a statement. The first Test against Pakistan will be played in Multan on October 7. England vice-captain Ollie Pope will lead the team against Sri Lanka in the absence of Stokes.

The English Football Association said in a statement: “Due to the results of tests carried out in Leeds on Tuesday, Stokes will miss England’s three-match Rothesay Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday, August 21. No additions will be made to the squad for this series.”

A left knee injury affected his bowling, and he appeared to be back to full fitness this summer after surgery. Stokes chose not to play in the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup to concentrate on his recovery, and then led England to a 3-0 win over the West Indies, taking five wickets in three Test matches at an average of 34.20.

However, during the Hundred, he played three matches for the Northern Superchargers, scoring only four runs and failing to take any points. England will face Sri Lanka at Old Trafford from August 21 to 25 before playing matches at home and at The Oval.
