Ascension Island Council receives letter of introduction from new Overseas Territories Minister

Ascension Island Council has received a letter from the new Minister of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Stephen Doughty, who has responsibility for the Overseas Territories. In his letter dated 26 July 2024, Minister Doughty expressed his deep honour and privilege to hold the position of Minister and emphasised the enduring and valued relationship between the Overseas Territories and the United Kingdom.

Minister Doughty acknowledged the vital strategic importance of Ascension Island to the UK and its allies and reiterated his commitment to supporting the island community and protecting the natural environment. He expressed his eagerness to collaborate on the goals of the One Island Vision and explore opportunities to enhance the coordination of UK Government activities on the island, with the aim of further achieving strategic objectives and enhancing community wellbeing.

In its response, the Island Council stated that

“The Council welcomes everyone’s support for the ‘Ascension One Island Vision’. Together, with the support of the UK Government, we are committed to creating an island environment with fantastic opportunities for islanders. We are proud of our cultural and natural heritage and recognise the importance of our environment to achieving UK and global biodiversity targets.”
