Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera expressed gratitude to the Muslim World League for its strong support as Malawi is experiencing economic difficulties exacerbated by natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic and the geopolitical situation.
Chakwera said the Muslim World League helped build good friendships with governments and institutions in times of need.
Chakwera cited the example of the Muslim World League project celebration ceremony held at the Bingu International Conference Center (BICC) in Lilongwe when he declared a national state of disaster in Malawi, the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League was one of the first to respond and even visited the disaster-stricken areas to assess the situation on the ground and ensure that appropriate assistance was provided to resolve the problem.
“Given the Muslim World League’s stated commitment to alleviating the suffering of the people of Malawi caused by climate change, I felt it was important for me to attend this ceremony in person to express my gratitude for its long-term contribution to Malawi over the past three decades, and in particular for the short-term emergency relief it has provided over the past 30 weeks,” he said.
He also commended the Muslim World League for its initiative to connect drinking water to several areas in the Lilongwe Region.
“I think the people of Malawians need to know that through the support of the Muslim World League, we distributed 300 metric tons of maize meal to people with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the President stressed.
Headquartered in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, MWL is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1962 to spread Islam and increase understanding of the religion worldwide.
MWL promotes the welfare and development of the people of Malawia through humanitarian aid, educational projects and inter-religious dialogue.
The organization has been at the forefront of supporting orphans and providing educational scholarships to them for the past 25 years. The Muslim World League has also played a major role in providing relief assistance to Malawians during times of disaster.
Apart from this, MWL has also implemented various projects in the fields of health and agriculture, including providing drinking water to the community.
President Chakwera was accompanied on the visit by the First Lady, Monica Chakwera, MWL Secretary General, Sheikh Mohammed Al Issa, Cabinet Ministers including Water and Sanitation Minister, Abida Mia, Energy Minister, Ibrahim Matola, Gender Minister, Jean Sendeza and Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba, among others.
