Hours after Sandeep Ghosh resigned from the post of director of the National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Monday, the West Bengal health department notified his appointment as director of the National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Ghosh tendered his resignation on Monday morning citing “moral responsibility”, three days after the rape and murder of a postgraduate intern at the National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which triggered widespread protests across the state.
The appointment came as a surprise to many as Ghosh had earlier in the day announced his resignation not only as the Director of the Maternal and Child Health Faculty of Lagos Hospital but also from the State Health Service. He said his resignation was in response to the wishes of medical students, junior doctors and the public at the Lagos Hospital following the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate student at the Faculty last week.
Sources in the health department said that while Ghosh’s resignation as principal of RG Kar was accepted, his resignation from the state medical service was not accepted. Hence, he has been appointed as principal of NMCH with immediate effect.
Ajay Ray, former principal of NMCH, has been reappointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the state health department. Surhrita Pal, current Officer on Special Duty of the health department, has been appointed as the new principal of RG Kar MCH.
Ghosh said in announcing his resignation that he and his family had received some negative comments in recent days, which prompted his decision to resign. In addition, Ghosh also claimed that he was the target of a “political conspiracy” planned by a hostile organization.
He insisted, “I have never been involved in any political game.” The postgraduate student from the chest department of Khar Medical College and Hospital in Rajasthan was found dead of multiple injuries on Friday morning, soon after he attended a seminar at the institution.
