Roseau, Dominica (TDN)
– Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that a bipartisan advisory body will be formed in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which will be approved by the country’s parliament. The announcement was made at a press conference in Roseau on Wednesday, after the prime minister admitted that he welcomed the public statements made by Opposition Leader Lennox Linton in the aftermath of the hurricane. “While he (Linton) has not written to me directly, he seems to be engaging constructively,” Skerrit added. Earlier this week, Linton had lamented the “government’s laissez-faire approach to the recovery and reconstruction of the housing sector.” He went on to recommend a series of measures that the government should take to speed up recovery. Skerrit also appeared to be responding to public criticism that he has failed to directly involve parliament, especially the parliamentary opposition, in the country’s post-disaster recovery plan. According to Skerrit, the advisory body will be composed of three members appointed on the advice of the government and two members appointed by the opposition United Workers Party. Speaking about the role of the advisory body, Prime Minister Skerrit insisted that its main focus is to help guide Dominica’s recovery after Hurricane Maria. The country has been struggling to return to normalcy since it was hit by a Category 5 hurricane on September 18, 2017. Despite millions of dollars pledged by foreign governments and aid agencies, very little of that money has reached the island.

Parliament is expected to meet in February to discuss and finalize the formation of the advisory body.
