SINGAPORE: President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will co-chair a new World Bank advisory committee focused on addressing the looming jobs crisis in the global South, the Istana said on Monday (Aug 12).
The committee, launched on Monday, will provide advice and suggestions to the World Bank Group on policies and programs to address the issue.
The forum will bring together leading experts from government, business, civil society and academia to “provide thought leadership and actionable strategies for large-scale job creation,” the presidency said in a news release.
“The developed strategies will be reviewed within the World Bank Group for piloting in real-world applications in countries.”
Mr Tharman and former President of the Republic of Chile Michelle Bachelet have accepted the World Bank Group’s invitation to chair the High-Level Advisory Committee on Jobs for a two-year term ending in July 2026.
Mr Tharman will hold the role in an independent capacity, taking advice from Cabinet: “It is in the national interest for the President to discharge this role”.
one Legal framework Last year, parliament approved a bill for the president and ministers to take up positions in foreign countries and international organizations in their private capacity. The framework stipulates that the president and ministers can take up international positions when the cabinet deems it in the national interest to do so.
The Istana said on Monday that each of Mr Tharman’s positions had been approved by the Cabinet, was deemed to be in the national interest and did not require any remuneration.
Mr Tharman currently serves as Chairman of the G30 Council, Co-Chair of the Global Commission on Water Economics and a member of the World Economic Forum Council.
His term as co-chair of the UN Human Development Report Advisory Board ended on June 30 this year.
