On Friday, about 1,000 people took part in a demonstration organized by environmentalists.
The demonstration by Finnish environmental activist Elokapina began at 1pm on Friday in central Helsinki.
Four groups of protesters set out from different locations in central Helsinki: Old Church Park, Hakaniemi Market Square, the Parliament Building and the Supreme Administrative Court.
At 2:30 p.m., protesters arrived at Market Square, where roadblocks were set up to block traffic in front of the Presidential Palace.
Elokapina is the Finnish branch of Extinction Rebellion. The demonstration is part of the activist group’s “Myrskyvaroitus” (Storm Warning) campaign, which the group hopes will be the largest series of civil disobedience demonstrations in Finnish history.
The campaign aims to bring the climate crisis more prominently into the public discussion.
According to police, about 1,000 people took part in the protest, but according to a press release from Elokapina, 2,000 people were expected.
The activist group said protesters would remain on Pohjoisesplanadi until Friday evening.
