Summerhill View, a state-of-the-art 60-bed residential care home and day centre on Victoria Road, is nearing completion and is expected to be handed over to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in spring 2024 and then to Manx Care.

It was initially hoped that the home would be fully staffed by Manx Care, but other options are now being explored to ensure services at the new facility are delivered in the most efficient way, balancing cost-effectiveness with high standards of care.

As a result, Manx Care is investigating the feasibility of engaging an independent provider to staff and operate nursing homes on Manx Care’s behalf.

It is expected that the process of engaging a third-party supplier may take up to 12 months.

Our goal is to explore opening two of the four units in this new state-of-the-art building by the end of 2024 to accommodate some of the residents from Reayrt ny Baie.

Staff and residents/relatives at Reayrt ny Baie have been informed of the proposals and will be discussed individually to ensure that each staff member and resident has the opportunity to discuss their individual circumstances so that we can help them find the most appropriate placement and employment for the future.

The new office building replaces the Reayrt ny Baie office building on Albert Terrace in Douglas, which was currently outdated and unpractical for staff and residents.

David Hamilton, interim executive director of social care and integrated mental health, said:

“We recognise that this may cause some concern and may be an unexpected change for residents and their families living in Reayrt ny Baie. However, it is important that our residents have a suitable place to live that meets all their needs – Summerhill View will deliver that.”
