B.C. thrift store closed after historic explosive device dropped

SYDNEY — Navy experts have been sent to a Vancouver Island thrift store to deal with what police are calling a “historic military explosive device.”

RCMP with the Sidney-North Saanich Detachment said they were called by an employee at a Sidney store around 2:30 p.m. Saturday to report someone had left the device there.

RCMP said they evacuated the store and cordoned off the area as part of safety measures while they awaited rescue from Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt.

Police said Navy explosives experts arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and found the device to be fake.

The area has now reopened to the public.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they appreciate the assistance of Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt and thank the public for their patience.
