A series of artworks created by an undercover street artist has generated huge media interest and raised questions about their meaning.
Banksy, whose identity is unknown and the subject of endless speculation, has confirmed on Instagram that the latest painting to emerge in the City of London’s financial district is his.
Earlier this week, black silhouettes of goats, elephants, monkeys, wolves, pelicans and cats appeared in London.
But the latest image appears to have been created using clear spray paint on the police station’s windows to make it look like a giant aquarium.
On Sunday, police inspected the artwork and took photos.
“We are aware of criminal damage to a Metropolitan Police station (…),” Detective Chief Inspector Andy Spooner said in a statement.
He noted that police are in touch with local authorities who have guard booths.
Of the seven works that had been on display in London since Monday, two are no longer visible. One, a satellite dish with an image of a wolf, was stolen less than an hour after it turned up in southeast London on Thursday.
Contractors removed a disused billboard featuring a roaring cat in northwest London on Saturday, citing safety concerns.
New Banksy works are usually released months apart, and this week’s daily paintings have sparked speculation in the media and among the artist’s fans about their possible meanings.
The Observer speculated that their aim was to “entertain the public” during a turbulent week for the UK, which has seen violent riots in the streets of cities across the country.
Banksy’s support group, Pest Control Office, said there had been “too much theorising lately about the deeper meaning of each new painting”, the Sunday newspaper wrote.
