Each month is symbolized by a different flower, and the flowers of August are poppies and gladiolus. Those who celebrate during these days and weeks will be most pleased with one of the above, and if we ourselves celebrate a birthday or an important anniversary in August, we can use them to decorate our nursery or balcony.
The flowers mentioned also have symbolic meanings. For example, gladioli represent sincerity, strength, and even honor. In Victorian England, they were highly prized among lovers because they reminded people of Cupid’s arrow and were therefore thought to represent first love, and men often gave them to their sweethearts. The individual colors of gladioli also have special meanings. Red, like all flowers, symbolizes love and passion, pink symbolizes compassion, white symbolizes innocence, yellow symbolizes joy and friendship, and purple symbolizes happiness and friendship; therefore, it is recommended to take this into account when choosing flowers.

When we think of poppies, we usually think of the red ones that adorn wheat fields, but there are many different types of poppies, many of which can be planted or sown in ornamental beds; no matter which type we choose, the poppy primarily symbolizes the memory of the dead. This dates back to the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans, who believed that the poppy was a plant that could bring peace and tranquility to the dead, allowing them to rest in peace. Because the poppy was once attributed such powerful abilities, it also symbolized a strong and peaceful love between two people.

When they bloom, cut off the stems
Gladiolus has extremely low requirements for growing and is popular due to the wide range of color options. We plant the tubers in mid-May in a sunny location, they will also thrive in the shade, but in this case the flowers will not be as large and the color will not be as bright. We plant them ten centimeters deep in the ground and equally far apart, and when they bloom, we cut off the stems. This is the only way for them to please us again next year with new shoots, otherwise it will be necessary to buy new bulbs. However, in the fall they still need to be dug up and brought under the roof, as they will not survive the cold winter outdoors.

Gladiolus are very susceptible to diseases and pests. For example, they like to be bitten by snails and are often attacked by aphids, so we try to attract as many insects that feed on aphids as possible to the garden, such as ladybugs, spiders and thrips. Among gladiolus diseases, gray mold and rot are often attacked by fungal diseases.

The poppy is not susceptible to various diseases, and the variety that is usually seen in ornamental gardens is the California poppy. It loves the sun, but is not very demanding in terms of soil quality. If we want a garden full of black seeds, we leave the flowers on the plants, even after they bloom, since they produce fruits full of black seeds that self-sow. Because its roots grow very deep, it is easier to withstand periods of drought, since it can absorb water from great depths, and precisely because of its deep roots, it does not like to be transplanted, since it will quickly happen that we will damage or even tear it. Picking one of them off, since the roots are fleshy, but we would do considerable damage to the plant in this way.
