French security forces evacuated the Eiffel Tower and its surrounding area on Sunday after a man was seen climbing the structure just hours before the Olympic Games closing ceremony.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon. It is not clear where the unnamed man began his climb, but he was seen above the Olympic rings, just above the first viewing platform of the 330-meter-high monument. Police escorted tourists away from the vicinity of the tower around 3 p.m. The few who remained on the second floor were allowed to leave about 30 minutes later.
The closing ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. at the Stade de France in the Saint-Denis district, far from the Eiffel Tower. About 30,000 police officers were monitoring security in Paris on Sunday, and French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said there would be 3,000 security personnel around the stadium, the Associated Press reported.
