SINGAPORE: For the second time in less than a week, anti-death penalty activist group Transformative Justice Coalition (TJC) has received an order under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA).

The Ministry of Interior said on Sunday (August 11) that the correction instructions concern posts published by TJC on Facebook, Instagram and X on August 6.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the posts falsely claimed that Singapore would execute two death row inmates on Aug 2 and Aug 7, 2024, “without regard for due process of law” and that the state “uses the death penalty to arbitrarily decide people’s life and death”.

An article about government Fact-checking website Factually Further explanation is given as to why both assertions are false.

TJC has posted the required correction notices on all three social media platforms.

Earlier this weekwhich received a POFMA order for content related to the treatment of death row inmates. TJC also issued a correction notice on the relevant platform.

On Sunday, the Home Office also issued a targeted correction order to LinkedIn in relation to a post by “Julie O’Connor” on August 6. This means that LinkedIn is legally required to insert a notice in relation to the original post, with a link to the government’s clarification.

As of 4pm on Sunday, the post had received 1 “like” and has now been updated with a correction notice.

In response to CNA’s request for comment, the LinkedIn user said: “It is unrealistic to expect everyone to have the time or resources to fact-check every article they share; we generally rely on authors to fact-check their content and take responsibility for any inaccurate information.”

CNA has contacted the social media platform and TCJ for comment.
