The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service issued a tropical cyclone warning for the Leeward Islands and the British Virgin Islands as a weather system numbered AL98 entered the monitoring area.
As of 2 p.m. Eastern Caribbean Time (ECT) on August 10, 2024, AL98 was centered near latitude 12.0 degrees north and longitude 40.0 degrees west, approximately 1,498 miles southeast of Antigua and 1,696 miles southeast of the British Virgin Islands.
Meteorologists report that weather conditions over the next few days are favorable for the gradual development of AL98. The system is currently moving west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the central tropical Atlantic Ocean. Forecasters expect a tropical depression to form very likely early to mid-next week as AL98 approaches and potentially passes close to or over the Lesser Antilles.
Currently, AL98 has maximum sustained winds of approximately 25 mph with heavy gusts, and a forecast minimum central pressure of 1010 mb. While these numbers are not yet strong enough to indicate a major storm, it is likely to gain strength as the system approaches the Caribbean Sea.
Based on its current track, AL98 is expected to approach the Leeward Islands within two to three days. As a result, warnings may be issued for some islands within the next 48 hours.

Residents of potentially affected areas are strongly advised to develop a hurricane preparedness plan as soon as possible and be prepared to implement it on short notice.
The weather service stressed the importance of closely monitoring AL98 and being prepared to take necessary action. Updates will be provided regularly, with the next advisory scheduled to be issued around 8 p.m. ET.
