The Helsinki rescue service said on the social media site X (original Twitter) that an explosion related to excavation occurred at the construction site of the Laakso Hospital in Tölö in Helsinki.
According to the Helsinki City Rescue Service, rescue services received the alert at 2:39 p.m. on Friday.
The accident injured two construction workers, who were taken to hospital by emergency services for further examination.
The explosion scattered loose rocks onto nearby Stenbäckinkatu. An excavator was also damaged in the accident.
Rescue authorities estimated that the explosion was most likely caused by unexploded ordnance that exploded during construction.
eyewitness Alexi Thila He was working remotely from his nearby home when he heard an explosion outside.
“The sound is similar to the sound of a large bottle of champagne releasing pressure. You can definitely hear it,” Tila said.
From the window of his apartment, he could see rocks flying from the explosion site more than a hundred meters away.
“It was a bit difficult to continue working after the adrenaline rush,” Tila told Yle.
