Brazilian plane crashes with 62 people on board
The French-made plane was scheduled to fly to Guarulhos International Airport
The ATR-72 twin-turboprop aircraft of Voepass Linhas Aéreas crashed in a residential area of Vinhedo, São Paulo state, on Friday while approaching Guarulhos International Airport. None of the 62 people on board (58 passengers and 4 crew members) are believed to have survived.
Flight 2Z-2283 took off from Cascavel, Paraná at 11:59 a.m. at an altitude of 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) and lost control at around 1:22 p.m. and entered a rapid descent. Contact was reportedly lost at around 1:30 p.m. local time. According to local media reports, the aircraft issued a severe icing warning at 12,000 to 21,000 feet.
The two aircraft, powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127M engines and registered PS-VPB, were manufactured in France in 2010 and joined Voepass in 2022 and named Maritaca W. Videos circulating on the internet showed the aircraft spiraling down before hitting the ground and causing a fire in the Capela neighborhood of Vinhedo.
“Voepas has made every effort to support those involved. It is not yet clear how the accident occurred or the current condition of those on board, but the company is providing information to all passengers, relatives and collaborators through the 24-hour hotline 0800 9419712,” the airline said in a press release.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva observed a minute’s silence for the victims of the crash. The Brazilian Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) has launched an investigation into the accident.
