Ambassador Lorne T. McDonald, a distinguished diplomat who dedicated his life to the service of Jamaica and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), has passed away.
Ambassador McDonald’s family said in a statement today: “Ambassador McDonald passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.”
McDonald’s diplomatic career spanned decades and he made significant contributions to regional integration, trade negotiations and economic development.
Ambassador McDonald has served in various Jamaican posts, including High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, and Ambassador to Suriname.
He was appointed CARICOM Development Fund On 3 November 2008, he assumed the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CDF) and led the CDF from its start-up phase to a fully operational CARICOM Treaty-based organisation.

He directed the implementation of the Caribbean Development Fund’s Country Assistance Programs (CAPs) in eight beneficiary member countries, with commitments totaling nearly $50 million. These programs helped to narrow regional disparities, improve competitiveness, and boost investment in the Caribbean.
His diplomatic posts also include serving as Jamaica’s Permanent Representative to the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and Deputy Permanent Representative to the Jamaican Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS).
In 1994, the Secretary-General of the Organization of American States appointed McDonald as Inter-American Council on Economic and Social Affairs Pro Tempore. He later became the first Director of the Inter-Departmental Unit on Tourism. His leadership in these positions played an important role in shaping economic and social development throughout the Americas.
Ambassador McDonald’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to the Caribbean region. He was an unwavering advocate of regional cooperation to promote progress, prosperity and advancement for the people of the Caribbean.
His efforts were recognized in 2011 when the Jamaican government awarded him the Commander of the Order of Distinction for his distinguished service to regional and hemispheric affairs.
After retiring from a distinguished diplomatic career, Ambassador McDonald found enjoyment in the real estate industry, working with his daughter, Kaili Scott, at Coldwell Banker.
Ambassador McDonald holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, a Master’s degree in International Business from Long Island University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Pace University. His academic and professional achievements demonstrate his commitment to excellence and service.
