Castries, St. Lucia – 8day August 2024– The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) is pleased to announce the winners of the “She’s My ICT Champion” live competition held in honor of the ICT Girl of 2024. The competition was launched on the 21stEnglish Stone In March 2024, secondary school, university and vocational school students across our States Parties are invited to use their digital skills to showcase, through a short video, a female ICT leader they admire.
The competition aims to recognize and encourage young people in the ICT field, highlighting their creativity, technical prowess and potential to become future leaders in the field. A total of 17 entries were submitted to the competition, and the selection criteria included innovation, presentation and relevance to the theme.
In the Year 12-15 category, three winners were from St Vincent’s Girls’ High School. Leah Nanton won 1English Stone 1000 ECD and 500 ECD for her school. Kalen Browne won 2nd Josel DaSilva won 750 ECD and finished thirdroad won the first prize of EC$500. Meanwhile, Kelly Huang from Dominica Grammar School won EC$250 for the “Most Liked” section of the category. This was determined by who received the most likes across all ECTEL official social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube LinkedIn and X (Twitter).
In the 16+ category, Bradley Alexander from St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College was the only male in the competition and took first placeEnglish Stone The winner received a prize of EC$1,000, plus an additional EC$500 for his school. Bradley also received EC$250 for the “most liked” category. Tonna-Shay Miller from Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) in St. Kitts and Nevis received 2nd Axyahn Smithen from CFBC also won 3rd place and won 750 ECD.road Rank 1st and win EC$500.
The judging panel consisted of Janique-ka John from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a freelance software engineer based in Rome, Medisha Augustine-Casimir, a virtual support specialist and digital marketer from the Commonwealth of Dominica, and Thea Jerome, an intern at ECTEL. The judges were impressed with the entries, saying they were “creative, interesting, and showed off the talents of our Caribbean students! It’s so rewarding to know that they have found ICT role models to emulate.”
ECTEL congratulates all winners and participants for their outstanding contributions to the ICT sector. This competition not only highlights the talent within our schools, but also highlights the importance of supporting and encouraging young people, especially girls, to pursue degrees and careers in the field of Information and Communications Technology. The competition also provided a platform to showcase the many women leaders in ICT from ECTEL’s member states. The Council also thanks the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commissions (NTRCs) of the Commonwealth of Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines for presenting the prizes to the winners on behalf of ECTEL.
