The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the death of former CAF President Issa Hayatou.

Issa Hayatou led CAF from 1988 to 2017 and left an important legacy for African football. Dr. Motsepe expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the former president, the CFA, its president Samuel Etou and all the Cameroonian people. In a press release, he highlighted Hayatou’s immense contribution to the development and growth of African football and said: He will never lose his place in our hearts and memories.

Following Dr. Motsepe’s directive, the flags of CAF and its member federations will fly at half-mast for five days until August 13, 2024, in tribute to Issa Hayatou.

CAF and African football are losing an iconic figure whose impact on the sport will continue to be celebrated and respected. May the soul of President Issa Hayatou rest in peace.
