Hot and calm sea conditions made for tough testing for paddlers at the National Single Rowing Championships on Saturday.
Over the past two months, many paddlers have competed in the National Single Rowing Series, with a variety of conditions providing great challenges.
On Saturday, 12 paddlers stood at the starting line ready to begin the 18-kilometre race from Boiler in Avarua to Avana and back.
Te Tupu o Te Manava rowers dominated the front few places, with top Masters rowers Reuben Dearlove and Andre Tutaka-George pulling ahead of the rest of the field early on and being almost neck and neck at the halfway point. Dearlove then extended his lead on his home course, finishing in 1.37.15 hours, with Tutaka-George two and a half minutes behind in 1.39.47 hours.
Arno Theijssen, a Masters rower who has performed well this season, rounded out the top three with a time of 1.47.02 hours.
Women’s Masters rower Serena Hunter was solid throughout the race and extended her lead after the halfway mark, crossing the finish line in 1.53.03.55, about 3 minutes faster than Ngakau Toa’s Ioana Turia (1.56.02), with Talissa Koteka in third in 1.58.17.
“It was a tough fight,” Hunter said. “I think everybody gave it their all and there was absolutely no hiding.”
In the 12km sprint from Boiler to Matavera point and back, senior paddler Conrad Hunter of Te Tupu took first place in 1.13.13, with Rob Brown two minutes behind in second place, while Kelly Pick of Te Tupu put in a strong performance to take third place overall and first female in 1.15.42.
Special mention must go to the under 16 paddlers Makenna Gribble and Maddy Spurle who took part in the 12km challenge.
The Cook Islands Canoeing Association (CICA) looks forward to seeing more great performances from these young people and others.
In two weeks the V6 National Series will continue, culminating in the 18km National Championships at the end of September.
Paddlers have a busy season ahead of them, with the Cook Islands Games in October and the Whakaaiwa Regatta in November.
The Cook Islands will also be sending an Under-16 girls team coached by Tupuna Amo to compete in the International Va’a Federation World Sprint Championships in Hilo, Hawaii next week, with the team set to leave Rarotonga this weekend. CICA wishes the national representatives all the best.
Meanwhile, Jules Tamaariki is the newly appointed coordinator of Vaka Eiva 2024. She is currently processing registrations for the event.
Vaka Eiva will take place from November 22nd to 29th, with registration closing on October 2nd.
