Foxtel, a provider of traditional broadcast services through set-top boxes, has launched a number of digital products over the past five years in an effort to find sustainable revenue amid a steady decline in traditional customers. It currently has 1.2 million paying subscribers for its traditional Foxtel set-top boxes.

News Corp’s total revenue for the quarter rose 6% to $2.58 billion. EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) rose 11% from the previous quarter to $380 million, with HarperCollins and REA Group offsetting a sharp decline in the news media division.

Sports streaming service Kayo added 108,000 paying customers in the quarter, likely thanks to its popular AFL and NRL programming, while entertainment service Binge added 76,000 paying customers.

In Australia, paying subscribers to News Corp mastheads include The Australian, The Daily Telegraph and Herald Sun The company said revenue in Australia fell 5 per cent “due to lower circulation and subscription revenues”.
