The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has updated Kenyan banknotes to comply with constitutional standards. The changes will affect the 50 Kenyan Shilling, 100 Kenyan Shilling, 200 Kenyan Shilling, 500 Kenyan Shilling and 1,000 Kenyan Shilling notes. The CBK clarified that these new notes will circulate alongside existing notes.
The main updates to the new banknotes include:
a. Signature of Dr. Kamau Thugge, Governor of CBK.
b. Signature of Dr Chris Kiptoo, Chief Secretary, National Treasury.
c. Printing year – 2024.
d. Each denomination of banknote has a new security thread with a unique color-changing effect.
The new banknotes will be issued first in the 1,000 Kenyan shilling note, with other denominations to follow in the coming months.
“The remaining features will remain the same as the 2019 version. All banknotes currently in circulation will remain legal tender and will be accepted alongside the new banknotes.” The statement said.
The new note has a unique texture and when you run your fingers over it, you can see the word “Kenya”, the denomination and the edge clearly printed on it. When you hold the note up to the light, you can see the watermark with a lion’s head, the words “CBK” and the note’s denomination.
The security thread on the note will appear as a continuous line that changes color when tilted, and the gold band on the note will reveal the denomination under ultraviolet light.
The changes are in accordance with Section 22 of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, which requires the central bank to determine the characteristics of banknotes and coins in consultation with the minister. The bank must inform the public of these updates through the Gazette and other media channels.
