U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday he would not pardon his son Hunter Biden in his trial in Delaware.
According to court documents, Hunter, 53, is accused of failing to disclose his illegal drug use when he purchased the revolver in 2018 and possessing the gun for 11 days.
When asked by ABC News if President Biden had “ruled out” the possibility of pardoning his son, he answered a firm “yes.” When asked if he would accept the outcome of the trial, he answered “yes” again.
If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison. However, the U.S. Department of Justice has recommended a shorter sentence for such crimes.
Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter’s brother Beau, testified in court. She told the court that she found the revolver in Hunter’s truck. Hallie testified: “I panicked and wanted to throw them away.”
In her testimony, she explained how she placed the gun in a leather pouch, then in a shopping bag and finally in a trash can at the market.
She told the court, “I didn’t want him to hurt himself and I didn’t want my child to find it and hurt themselves.”
Federal prosecutors said Hunter was heavily addicted to cocaine when he bought the guns. They allege Hunter lied to a federally licensed gun dealer, made false statements about drug use on his application and illegally possessed the guns.
Hunter, however, has maintained his innocence, arguing that the Justice Department is unfairly targeting him under political pressure from Republicans.
