Alarmed by the increase in cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and its spread to neighboring countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday declared the outbreak of smallpox in Africa a public health emergency of international concern.

“According to the latest epidemiological reports, our country has registered 15,664 suspected cases and 548 deaths since the beginning of the year,” Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said in a separate video message seen by AFP on Thursday.
