According to the National Police Agency of Japan, the bodies of about 4,000 people were found just one month later. It was not until nearly a year later that it was known that 130 people had died.

According to data from the National Police Agency of Japan, about 37,227 people living alone were found dead at home. More than 70% of them were over 65 years old.
About 40% of the bodies were found within a day. About 3,393 bodies were found a month later. The remaining 130 bodies were never even noticed before they were found.
Police have given the data to a government group investigating accidental deaths, according to Japanese public television network NHK.
Before this year, Japan’s National Institute of Population and Social Security Research said that “by 2050, the number of Japanese citizens over 65 years old may reach 18 million.”
