Paris 2024 Olympics come to an end
Actor Tom Cruise was the main focus at Sunday’s awards ceremony
The curtain has fallen on the 2024 Paris Olympics. The traditional sporting event, which was marred by controversy over the femininity of Algerian boxers, ended with a spectacular opening ceremony featuring American actor Tom Cruise performing stunts.
France took over the baton for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in front of 70,000 spectators at the Stade de France, with the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and French President Emmanuel Macron shaking hands and waving as the crowd cheered him on.
The first half of Sunday’s show celebrated French culture, while the second half was more “Hollywood” in preparation for the next Olympics. Part of the closing ceremony included so-called “athlete karaoke,” during which some of the Olympic competitors belted out Queen’s iconic song “We Are the Champions.”
“Despite the tense situation in the world, you have come here from 206 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Team to make the City of Light shine brighter than ever before,” said Bach, the 1976 Olympic fencing champion. “Every performance excites the whole world,” he added.
“You performed amazingly. You competed fiercely against each other. Every game was close to perfection. Every performance excited the world. You showed us the greatness of humanity. The 2024 Paris Olympic Games is the most wonderful gathering for athletes and the world of sports,” he said, going on to praise the event as “younger, more urban, more inclusive and more sustainable” and “the first Olympics to achieve full gender equality.” The IOC President then declared the 2024 Olympic Games closed. “See you in Los Angeles…”
Cruise was hoisted onto the stage by ropes. He shook hands with gymnast Simone Biles, who handed him the Olympic flag. He then hung the flag on the back of his motorcycle and rode away. Cruise then rode through the streets of Paris before jumping out of a plane in a pre-recorded action thriller in which the two “oos” of the famous Hollywood sign were replaced by the colorful Olympic rings.
The ceremony was also attended by celebrities such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Billie Eilish.
