Forget the surfers: Here are the best photos from these games
While searching for the perfect wave, two top surfers suddenly came across a whale. And there was a photographer there too.

Surfing can be magnificent, a visual feast, a spectacle. But it can also be terribly boring. Two surfers each have half an hour in the water waiting for the perfect wave. If she comes within that half an hour: Wow! If she doesn’t, this is what happens during that half an hour: Nothing. The perfect touch of the perfect wave is like rhythmic gymnastics back in the day. But sometimes it comes, even in calm times: the moment that changes everything. We’ve known this since photographer Jérôme Brouillet captured the Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina striking his iconic pose on the water last week. “The most spectacular photos of the 2024 Olympics,” we wrote. Bruyère’s photo went viral around the world.
Now, superlatives are something that should be used with caution. For the present reason: Bruyer managed to outdo his own super photo Medina during the surfing semifinals on Tuesday night in Tahiti, South Sea. As of now, here are the photos from these Summer Olympics.
During Tatiana Weston-Webb and Brisa Hennessy’s duel off the coast of Teahupo’o Beach Village, Bruyer pulled the trigger just as a whale jumped out of the Pacific Ocean behind the two surfers and plunged backwards into the sea.
Animal support helped Weston-Webb more than her rival Hennessey, but the Brazilian didn’t win a women’s surfing competition either. But photographer Bruyer did win gold from those competitions. Or will someone else follow?
