After Monday’s storm, the central railway line between Brienz and Interlaken will be closed for several weeks for repair work. The railway infrastructure was severely damaged. First of all, the attachments had to be removed from the rails. The electrical system also needs repairs.
Zentralbahn announced after a stocktake on Tuesday evening that replacement buses would run during the disruption. Streams that overflowed the banks of the Brienz River washed large amounts of debris into the trackbed and the kilometer-long Brienz Railway Tunnel. On Tuesday, wood and rubble up to five meters high were on the tracks.
The water level was two meters above the track level. Zentralbahn expects to have to lay new tracks and replace sleepers. The water damaged much of the electrical equipment. Railway chiefs were unable to quantify the extent of the damage on Tuesday evening.
