Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday invited US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the Peace Summit, which will be held in Lucerne on June 15-16. “I appeal to the leaders of the world (…), the leader of the United States, President Biden, and the leader of China, President Xi (…): Please support the Peace Summit with your leadership and participation,” Zelenskyy said in a video address.
According to the Swiss government portal that reported on the event in early May, Switzerland has invited more than 160 delegations, but not Russia “at this stage”. Guests include members of the Group of Seven, Group of Twenty, BRICS, many other countries on all continents, as well as the European Union, three international organizations and two representatives of religious circles.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has made it clear amid heavy criticism that it has no interest in attending the conference. The Kremlin has made it clear on several occasions that it will not participate in any negotiations if Kiev does not accept Russia’s annexation of the approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory it currently occupies. President Zelensky said yesterday that “more than 80 countries have confirmed their participation”.
