Kabul (Pajhwok): Farid Zekria, an Afghan who returned to Afghanistan after 44 years, said the reality in the country is totally different from what is being promoted on social media (SM).
He was happy with the situation in the country and said he would send his family as well in a few months.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, he said that he moved to the United States in 1980 due to political issues and war and returned to Afghanistan on April 8, 2024, 44 years later.
At that time, he said, Kabul was a center of science and culture, and Afghanistan was in true peace.
“With the arrival of the revolution and the start of the civil war, the unfortunate foundations for Afghanistan were laid,” he said.
Zekeriya said that for this reason, after spending some time in Pakistan, he decided to leave Afghanistan and move to the United States.
He said that at first life as an immigrant was not easy and he faced many problems, but as time went on, things returned to normal: “Now our lives are normal, the children are busy with their studies and I also have a small business to run.”
Zekeriya has four children who were born abroad and are currently busy working in the medical field.
He said his children, besides being born and raised in a foreign country, speak Pashto and Dari.
When I decided to come to Afghanistan, the whole family was against his decision, but he decided to come. During his three-month stay, he visited different provinces – Kandahar, Balkh, Herat, Nangarhar and Panjshir.
He said he had visited different parts of Afghanistan without facing any difficulties, but the coverage of Afghanistan on social media was negative.
Compared to when he left Afghanistan, the situation has changed a lot and has made great progress. He hopes that Afghanistan can achieve greater development and be able to compete with its neighbors.
He praised the national security but added that poverty, worsening economic conditions and ban on work and education for girls were two issues that needed urgent attention from the government.
Speaking about the importance of education for both boys and girls, he said the first chapter of the Holy Quran, Revelation, talked about reading and said universal education would help reduce illiteracy in the country.
Zekeriya also stressed intra-Afghan negotiations and said all issues can be resolved through negotiations.
He returned to the United States on Tuesday and said that after observing Afghanistan up close, he was satisfied with the situation there and that his family would also visit Afghanistan in a few months.
