The Zambia Compulsory Standards Authority (ZCSA) wishes to assure all consumers and trade outlets that all Mealie Meal brand products currently available in the market are safe to consume.
The ZCSA, which regulates the production and supply of maize flour, has called on the public not to panic over recent public concerns about the safety of maize flour as there are effective food safety and quality control systems in place to protect consumers.
After excessive levels of aflatoxin were detected in some batches of corn meal and dog food, the agency worked with other state agencies to take appropriate measures to protect the health and safety of consumers.
We wish to place on record that the affected batches of maize meal that were found and withdrawn from the market and factories have been destroyed as per Section 16(4)(b) of the Mandatory Standards Act.
ZCSA stressed that the aflatoxin content problem only occurred in the above identified batches of Mealie Meal. In addition, consumers should note that all brands of products currently on the market have passed safety certification, including brands that have withdrawn and destroyed the affected batches from the market.
ZCSA remains committed to ensuring that only safe products are supplied to consumers.
The agency will continue to conduct routine factory inspections to ensure products are tested before they are released to the market, and will conduct market surveillance inspections across the country to ensure ongoing compliance and protect the health and safety of consumers.
ZCSA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, established under the Mandatory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017 to administer, maintain and ensure compliance with mandatory standards for the protection of public safety and health, consumers and the environment.
