The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) says the feasibility study for the Batoka hydropower plant has been reviewed.
Zambia Railways chief executive Munyaradzi Munodawafa said in an interview yesterday that a review of the project’s demonstration structure, power station and capacity output had been completed.
Mr Munodawafa said authorities are currently awaiting the second phase of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
“We have reviewed the feasibility study for the Batoka Hydropower Station. The demonstration structure, power station structure and capacity output study for the project have been completed,” Mr Munodawafa said.
The study and environmental impact assessment are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2015, he said.
Mr Munodawfa said consultants were currently conducting other processes before a project committee comprising senior government officials, the utility and the Zambia Railways Authority would look at the project this month.
He said once all these processes are completed, ZRA will be able to select the developer of the project after which the agency will be able to determine the actual value of the project.
Zambia and Zimbabwe have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate in launching the Batoka hydropower project, which is expected to cost about $4 billion.
The agreement was signed during a recent ministerial meeting in Kariba, Sia Vonga.
