The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has so far imported 140,000 tonnes of wheat against the country’s import target of 200,000 tonnes to ease wheat shortage in the country.
MAZ chairman Andrew Chintala said the wheat imports approved by the government in March this year were nearing completion.
Mr. Chintala said in an interview that the licenses were initially issued to importers for 100,000 pounds of B1 wheat, and because of the huge shortfall, an additional 100,000 pounds was added.
He said that the country has imported 140,000 tonnes of wheat out of a total of 200,000 tonnes so far, accounting for 70 per cent of the total wheat imports.
