Zambia has started importing 218MW of electricity from the Electricity Supply Commission of South Africa (ESCOM) during off-peak hours. The move will commence on August 1 and is aimed at alleviating power shortages in the country.
ZPC spokesperson Matongo Maumbi confirmed the additional power imports in an interview with ZNBC News at the 96th Agricultural and Business Association Exhibition in Lusaka. Maumbi said the imports allow ZPC to stabilize power supply, meet growing demand and ensure uninterrupted power to critical facilities such as hospitals, mines and other industries.
Maumbi stressed that ZESCO is taking steps to ensure that public institutions are not affected during the power cuts. The power company is isolating certain public institutions and has procured generators to maintain power supply during the power cuts.
“So far, 22 generators have been procured and are expected to arrive in the country within this month,” Maumbi said. The generators will be installed in critical public institutions such as hospitals and market areas, which are difficult to be isolated from the national grid during power outages.
This strategic move by Zambia Power Corporation is aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply and supporting essential services in the country amid growing energy demand.
