Zambia has been actively contributing to peace on the African continent through its contribution to United Nations-led peace missions.
Lieutenant General Humphrey Nyone, Force Commander of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central Africa (MINUSCA), said the threat dynamics and changing geopolitics require a reinvigorated peacekeeping presence.
Lieutenant General Nyone made the remarks during a visit to Zambia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Her Excellency Winnie Natara Chibesakonda, in Berlin last week.
He noted that Zambia has a long history of participation in UN peacekeeping operations, dating back to 1988 when it first sent peacekeeping troops to Iraq, and is currently one of the top 20 countries contributing UN peacekeepers.
Lieutenant General Nyone said Zambia has deployed a large number of troops in various peacekeeping operations, most of whom serve in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), where he is the Force Commander.
He said that peacekeeping operations led by the United Nations or the African Union help affected countries to move out of the difficult road from conflict to peace, and peacekeeping is one of the most effective tools for the United Nations or the African Union to promote and maintain global and regional peace and security.
Lieutenant General Nionet is in Berlin to attend a high-level UN conference on peacekeeping missions, leadership and exchanges on new challenges, solutions and opportunities.

She noted that instability anywhere in the world affects the entire planet and stressed the importance of peace as a prerequisite for development and progress.
