Breaking News: ZACC’s X account officially announces that Wicknell Chivayo must be arrested

Reporter | ZimEye | Harare, June 22, 2024 – In a sudden and unexpected development late on Saturday night, the official X account of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) published a series of explosive posts calling for the arrest of convicted ZANU PF member and money launderer Wicknell Chivayo. The posts have since sparked widespread discussion and confusion among citizens and businesses.

An individual claiming to be a senior ZACC staffer using the username @MhepoYeNyika posted a series of tweets from the commission’s official account. The tweets, written in a mixture of Shona and English, revealed discontent within the commission over allegations of high-level corruption and pressure to divert attention away from frivolous issues.

One tweet read: “I swore an oath to defend truth and justice and it is my duty to expose to the public the depth of corruption that plagues our country.” Another tweet stressed that there was pressure within the commission to avoid charging Chiwayo with serious crimes, and instead focus on distractions that were likened to “discussions about goats.”

The posts quickly attracted widespread attention and reaction online, with many praising the courage of the so-called whistleblower, while others questioned the legitimacy of the allegations and the security of the committee’s communication channels.

Later that evening, ZACC released an official announcement announcing that its X account had been compromised. The announcement, signed by commissioner Thandiwe Mlobane, appeared to confirm the alleged security breach and urged the public to ignore any recent communications from the account. According to the announcement, the commission last took control of the account on June 20, 2024, at 18:25.

The notification stated: “The Commission reiterates its commitment to eradicate the scourge of corruption and ensure that the development aspirations of the country are achieved within the stipulated time frame” and assured the public that efforts were being made to recover the accounts.

The incident raises questions about the true state of the fight against corruption within ZACC. If the claims in the post are true, it indicates that there are major obstacles and potential external influences in the functioning of the commission.

As the situation unfolds, the public awaits further clarification and action from ZACC on the security breaches and allegations against high-profile individuals like Wicknell Chivayo.
