Young people from Panevėžys will gather for a picnic at Marijonų Sode this Saturday. The event has been held for nine consecutive years and attracts more than a thousand young people. This year, the organizers promised them half a day of fun in the park.
This year, more than ever, the Youth Picnic is ready to gather the community and show all residents of Panevěž just how much our city has to offer.
As promised by event organizers, the teen picnic will be able to visit four areas: sports, education, family and shopping.
In the sports area, you can play basketball, football, try boxing training, and learn Latin dance. As for educational activities, you can visit robotics and graffiti workshops and take pottery classes.
Educational and musical games for children as well as various workshops will await the picnic participants in the Family Area.

Ideas for young people growing up
The picnic has grown into a major event that was born nine years ago when ten young people came up with the idea of organizing a music festival for young people in Panevěž.
Even a location near Śiśki was chosen, said Gabija Jurkėnaitė, one of the organizers.
However, young people’s enthusiasm faces a major obstacle – financing.
Nine years ago, no one in Panevěž – neither businesses nor the municipality – was willing to support such an idea, skeptical of its point of view and appeal to the community.
Without money, you can’t organize a festival.
“But we already had a fan base and we thought a picnic would be enough for young people,” Gabija recalled.
When they were together, they were not apart
One weekend, a triathlon was being held in Panevěž, and a group of young people gathered for a picnic on the grass of the Cultural and Recreation Park next to the tennis courts.
The variety of activities back then was far less than what is seen at today’s youth picnics. This time, participants played table football and tennis and had a few matches, but it was enough for the young people to have the determination to develop their idea into an event that gathered thousands of people. Some participants of the first picnic liked it so much that they joined the organizing team themselves.
Both business companies and the city government trust this event in the long run.
Sponsors showed up, partners were added, and the picnic got underway as planned.
Show the fun side of everyday life
According to G. Jurkėnaitė, the number of people attending the picnic depends largely on the weather conditions. However, last year about 2,500 young people took part in the picnic in the Marijonų Garden.
“It’s so interesting to see that participants of the first picnic are now students and even people who come to the picnic with their children. I work in the youth career field myself and I find it quite difficult to keep young people over 14 years old interested. Therefore, we try to offer the most diverse and interesting activities at the picnic,” said Gabija.
She said the purpose of holding such events is to let young people know that life is not just about study, work and family, but also about interesting informal employment, various circles and non-governmental organizations.
“After trying activities like boxing at the picnic, maybe they will get interested and start attending training sessions, and maybe parents will see groups that interest their children”, G. Jurkėnaitė hopes.
