Young people’s confidence in the future is declining, falling to 68.4%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points.

The overall level of trust among young people fell from 68.6% to 68.4% (down 0.2 percentage points). In the first survey, it was 69.2%. Trust fell among young people aged 18 to 24 (from 73.8% to 71.2%), while it rose among those aged 25 to 34 (from 66.1% to 68.3%). The data show a significant increase in positive emotions (+9%) compared to the previous report in May 2024, while negative emotions fell sharply (-9%), especially those related to anger and pain. This can be attributed to the arrival of the summer vacation, which improves the overall mood. These are the results of the third Youth Confidence Index survey published by the National Youth Council (CNG), which “allows regular monitoring of the views and expectations of young Italians, giving a detailed understanding of their levels of confidence in various aspects of their daily life.”

The CNG is a consultative body responsible for representing young people in discussions with institutions. It is heard by the President of the Council of Ministers or by the political authority authorized to do so; it expresses its opinion and makes recommendations on youth policy regulation actions initiated by the Government.

Investigation

The survey, conducted with the technical support of the Piepoli Institute, shows a positive leap in confidence in the economy (balanced +6) and a recovery in perceptions of salary adequacy (+6%), close to March’s figures. Work-life balance improved slightly (+3%). Optimism about the future remained stable at 58%. Despite the media attention paid to the 2024 Olympics, the practice of sports and the perception of physical fitness dropped sharply (-5%) and (-4%) respectively. Trust in artificial intelligence is also collapsing (-5%), indicating growing concerns or disillusionment with this technology. Perceptions of the importance of culture and trust in the education system also seem to be declining, with decreases of (-3%) and (-2%) respectively.

The complex landscape of signal conflict

Finally, the continued negative trend in trust in schools and universities, as well as the decline in the importance of culture, is worrying.”
